Funny Tales on Developing The Legend of Furiax: An Exclusive Interview
The journey of The Legend of Furiax would not have been the same without the collaboration of Funny Tales, our official partner in game development. Fresh from their participation at GDC in San Francisco, Funny Tales shared insights into their creative process, the challenges of integrating blockchain technology, and what makes this game a unique entry in the gaming world.
How would you describe Funny Tales and your mission in the gaming industry?
Funny Tales was born out of a passion for video games, creativity, and the new frontiers that gaming technology allows us to explore. Our mission is to create unique experiences that blend innovative gameplay with cutting-edge technology while ensuring maximum fun for players of all ages. We strongly believe that video games are a powerful medium for breaking down barriers and creating global communities.
What were the most exciting aspects of collaborating with Zoppel on this project?
Working with Zoppel has been an exciting opportunity to explore the integration of video games, new technologies, and other media. The most stimulating aspect was finding the perfect balance between technical innovation and the immediacy of the shoot 'em up genre. The Zoppel team is a powerhouse of ideas, both in storytelling and technology, and collaborating with them has been incredibly energizing, fun, and inspiring.
How did you integrate Zoppel’s identity into the gameplay and narrative?
From the very beginning, we worked to ensure that Zoppel’s identity was deeply embedded in the game. The narrative universe of Zoppel serves as the foundation for every decision in The Legend of Furiax. Additionally, players can earn and trade Artifacts through a blockchain-based system. These Artifacts—unique items and equipment—add strategic and social dimensions to gameplay while expanding the game’s lore.
Which phase of the development process excited you the most?
The ideation and prototyping phase was particularly thrilling. It was a time for pure creativity, where we explored unique gameplay and narrative concepts. Seeing the first prototypes come to life, testing mechanics, and sharing those discoveries with the Zoppel team was incredibly rewarding. This phase shaped the game’s vision and set the foundation for everything that followed.
Can you give us a sneak peek at some of the game’s unique features?
The Legend of Furiax takes players on an adventure where they step into the shoes of a Council of Sages apprentice, tasked with finding Anna and warning her of an impending attack threatening the destruction of Gordon Spirit. The game stands out for its hybrid approach, blending classic shoot 'em up action with blockchain-based reward systems. Players can customize their character and mount with unique upgrades and rare collectibles—some of which could hold real-world value. The story further expands the Zoppel universe, offering fresh perspectives beyond what readers have already experienced in Zoppel Volume 1.
